November 20, 2025, 13 to 14:30h, Department of Musicology

Following the perFormance of

“Lets Experiment!” frOm November 19

at the Music FoRum Festival,

I will focus on Song Books by John Cage. Experimental on

many levels, this lecture intrOduces the piece,

a turning point in Cage’s work, its estHetic and cultural contexts.

Consecutively, all the workshop’s participaNts can create their own practical

 and productive enCounters

with this piece. Commissioned by FestivAl d’Automne a Paris in 1970

this mile stone in music is an encompassinG compilation of musical material,

arranged in 90 solos for voicE and/or theater,

in 8 notation types. As an experimental multI-media model of theater,

Song Books contains aNd structures a wide range of

references to historic anD current cultural life, from the

arts over politics to Everyday actions, and to two

of his favorite artists: FrEnch composer Erik Satie

and the 19th century American Poet and thinker Henry David Thoreau.

The wealth of mateRial in Song Books

musik”, whilE many solos

need performers’ actions in suCh an encompassing way,

which makes them almosT composers themselves.

Resonanz – Kulturelle Praxis und performative Analyse zeitgenössischer (Kunst-)Musik

Resonance  – Cultural Practice and Performative Analysis of Contemporary (Art) Music

Salzburg. 2013–2016 internationales FWF-Forschungsprojekt „New Music Festivals as Agorai“ (Univ. Salzburg). Bratschistin des Kairos Quartetts (Berlin).

This inspiring book in German and English reflects on the aesthetic, cultural and performative dimensions of contemporary (art) music. It opens up and challenges new perspectives in musicological and artistic research with a cultural studies orientation. It focuses on the principle of resonance, complemented by the author's multidimensional concept of performance-oriented musical analysis.

Texts from the last 15 years are divided into two main chapters: Cultural Practice – including analyses of major festivals such as Warsaw Autumn, Festival d'Automne à Paris and Wien Modern, the importance of live performance and visual music research; and Current Musical Scores – including performative analyses of seminal compositions by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Georg Friedrich Haas, Giorgio Netti and Marco Stroppa.

Simone Heilgendorff: Habilitated musicologist, violist and music curator. University teacher since 1993, currently at the UdK in Berlin (D) and at the University of Salzburg (Austria). 2013–2016 head of the international FWF research project „New Music Festivals as Agorai" (Univ. of Salzburg). Violist of the Berlin based Kairos Quartet.
